I was born of the sea,

as we all are—

amniotic ocean

surrounding us—

the salt of labor’s water

at our birth

christening us into this world.

I have been wet most of my life

filled with tears and sweat,

sweet river of the soul’s struggle.

Even now as I dwell in this desert place,

simulated ocean sounds lull me at night.

I can feel the vibration of an aquifer’s call

below this sandy earth,

and the rumblings of the arroyo beside me.

There is no drying for me.

I will always be washed

by this cosmic fluid

calling me home,

the undulation of tides through my veins.

I am an unknown selkie of the milky way,

my seal skin forever

just beyond my reach.
