Desert Heat

You can tell in the mornings

if the day will be warm,

not just hot,

nuclear.

Early warning alarms of cicadas,

electronic droning

indicating intense

radiation from the sun.

On extreme days,

the sun will burn you up

when you step out for patio coffee

or to tend plants.

The sizzle of water upon tender leaves,

a warning to cover up,

yourself and them.

It is in this moment,

the coolness of spring maidens

are ravaged by the ferocity

of fiery summer gods.
