Reiki 3- Usui Method, Master / Instructor Level

The Reiki Principles

Just for today, I will not anger.

Just for today, I will not worry.

Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

Just for today, I will be kind to all living things.

Reiki three is about preparing you for the Master / instructor level.  It will introduce some new symbols, but also teach you how to attune others into this wonderful healing method of energy work. So congratulations on taking this final step! This course’s main purpose is to prepare you to pass on attunements and the Reiki Traditions.

There are four additional symbols, but there may be other symbols that you find from other paths or other manuals, the internet, or additional sources that feel right for you.  Remember that Reiki is about what is a right fit for you.  Also, the longer you practice the more you find that you will along with your methods evolve.  For me at this point, I bundle up my symbols into one sweeping intent, rather than use each one individually.  My attunement methodologies have evolved as well.  However, I am teaching you in this class the traditional way that I was taught rather than how I do it currently. Allow yourself the freedom of the fluidity of energy and its own evolutionary path within you.

Teaching Reiki:

To become a teacher of Reiki is not a requirement for a Master.  However, traditionally, if and when asked to attune someone, to teach them, you are expected to do so. This is the gift of Spirit.

Before taking on the responsibility of teaching, it is best to first gain experience and self confidence with the materials and practice. This is only achieved through doing attunements and plenty of healing sessions. Practice on stuffed animals for attunements and do healing on plants, animals, yourself and others. Practice using energy and feeling it flow through you.

The more you use your Reiki skills, the stronger you will become.  Also, with experience comes personalization of technique and abilities.  You will evolve.  I am sure that you are already doing things differently than when you first started out in Reiki one.  It has gotten easier and faster for you.  You sense the energy more quickly than when you first started.  This is individual to each person.  Practice daily self healings as well as on others.  Remember, you also deserve to be healed and share in the love and life force energy of the universe.  It’s a bit like putting on your own oxygen mask first before helping others.

We each have our own unique connection with the Universe and Spirit.  All of our experiences are also unique to each of us. Energy has its own will, and you’re only the vessel for energy.

Preparing your Treatment Space:

You have now been practicing Reiki 2 for at least a month.  You should at this point be preparing any space for energy work, Reiki space, yourself, meditation preparation, anything that you are doing needs to be cleansed and prepared to ensure good safety precautions through grounding, cleansing, and protection of your self, your clients and your space.  This is a reminder of how to start any session and a good place to begin before learning the next steps to Reiki healing.

Before starting any session, it is important to clear the space of any negative energy.  This includes you as well as the client.  There are several ways to clear negative energies.  If you do not do this step, you could be infusing the space, the client, and yourself with more negative energies resulting in a less effective treatment or some kind of energy sickness.

  1. Smudge the room, yourself and your client with:
  2. Sage
  3. Palo Santo
  4. A protection blend of herbs of your own creation.

Use the smoke from any of the above to permeate all corners of the room, doors and windows.  Use the smoke to permeate the body’s entire aura, making sure you get under the feet.

  1. Make a mix of salt and water in a spray bottle. Salt neutralizes both positive and negative energies.  Use the salt spray in all corners of the room, doors and windows.  Use the salt spray to permeate the body’s entire aura, making sure you get under the feet.
  1. Use the Reiki symbols in the air in big sweeping motions. You will now be able to do this.
  1. Make a hydrosol of essential oils with spring water and follow the same method as with the salt spray. Pine, Frankincense, Myrrh, Rose, Sandalwood, Cinnamon, Black pepper, and Clove are a great for this purpose.  Use only one or use them all or any combination.  Remember that the ratio is 15 drops to 1 oz. of water.  Add 20% alcohol, Brandy is traditional, but anything will work.  This acts as a preservative.

Use whichever method or any combination that works best for you.

The Symbols:

We are adding four new symbols but two of them have two versions, you can decide which versions work best for you.

DUMO:

The first symbol, has two versions, DUMO, and is pronounced,(do moe), it represents the swirling fiery heat of the Kundalini.  Dumo or Dumo Fire is the heat that rises up and over the spine as a result of the Kundalini awakening.  The idea is that the unification of mind and body produce the emanation of heat.  It is thought to be the igniter or spark of the Sacred Flame or Kundalini fire. It is believed that Dumo unifies mind and body, working with the fire in the root chakra.  Those who use this symbol claim that it pulls negative energy and disease out of a body,  room, or situation and releases it.  You can use either symbol version, try them both and see what works for you.

Some who work with crystals say that it can be used on crystals so that they self-clear. I personally use Reiki most often as a clearing method with my crystals.  If find it much easier than trying to remember which crystals go where, ie, sun, moon, ground, salt, etc.  Although, I also use a little salt in warm water for 15-20 seconds on crystals that can handle that.  The combination of both I find really great for my sparkly babies.

In Usui/Tibetan systems, it is used in the attunement process with the Violet Breath where it is visualized in gold.  Although some have claimed that it is the “goddess spiral” its tradition is drawn from Tibetan Medicine Buddha practices and not from Wiccan based faiths, or other Goddess Religions. The intent of Dumo is not a Wiccan based goddess spiral.

DAI  KO  MYO:

The Dai Ko Myo, pronounced, (DYE – Ko – MY- O), is known as the “Master” symbol.  It has two forms, both of which will be presented to you here.  It is considered to have the highest vibration and have the most powerful impact of all of the symbols. It is used in giving attunements and has the ability to heal the soul or the spirit.

It works on the aura and the chakras, helping to clear disease that originates from subconscious beliefs and thought forms.

When attunements are given, the procedure opens the crown chakra, exposing our energetic field, connecting a direct flow with the source energy; we are vulnerable at this moment with all of our beliefs, our filters, our perspectives revealed to the source, Creator energy or whatever you call it in your belief system. This sense of separation from the source energy is a physical plane, human illusion. We are always connected, but the use of Dai Ko Myo, reconnects our subconscious and conscious self with the source Divinity that was present all along, allowing us to heal ourselves first and then pass healing on to others.  This is a powerful gift and tool.

If we translate the individual components of the symbol we begin to see how it works.  “Dai” represents big or great, “ko” meaning light, glossy or smooth, and, “myo” translates to bright light, clear or evident and represents the verb understanding or knowing.  We can see how this illuminates the self path of inner truth or knowledge.  It helps us to realign with our true path.  I always say that in spirit we are all knowing and in this physical plane we are here to experience. Only through knowledge and experience van we gain understanding.  This symbol for me represents this concept for me and really is a foundational understanding of my own spiritual path.  I expect that you will derive your own meanings from it, but whatever concepts you develop from it; it is undeniable that it is quite powerful.

As you can see, they are very close with only slight variations.  You can choose which ever resonates with you the most, or you may find that you use both.  Some people can pick up on the subtle energy differences of the two and choose to do that.  Which ever way works for you is the right one for you! Experiment with both and see which one you like.

Nin Giz Zida, (Fire Serpent):

Nin Giz Zida or the Fire Serpent is a, “Tibetan” symbol used in the Usui / Tibetan traditions.  The snake or serpent represents the, “Sleeping Serpent” or Kundalini coiling or waiting at the base of the spine.  It is used during attunements, the horizontal line representing the crown chakra and winding its way down the spine, spiraling clockwise at the base. It serves to ground energy in the lower section of the body, tailbone to feet.

If you reverse the spiral, go counter-clockwise, starting at the base of the spine and work your way up the spine to the crown chakra, it pushes energy up to the upper four chakras, but the cap on the symbol will not allow the energy to escape the crown chakra.  This opens the central channel of the spine and allows for good energy flow.  It is believed that Fire Serpent opens the entire Chakra system as a whole. You can see how this symbol as tool can be useful in balancing the chakras and enhancing energy flow throughout the body as a whole.  Try using it for meditation or for your healing work. It is quite powerful and allows for greater receptivity of all energy work.  Typically you would work it like a zipper, opening the channel at the beginning of a session and closing it again at the end of the session, drawing the symbol in the proper direction for each procedure.

Raku:

Raku is  pronounced, (Ray- Koo), and is often called the thunder bolt or lightening bolt.  Some say that is should be used only in passing attunements, but generally not in individual healings; others use it with healing work.  It can intensify the energy going into a treatment.  It is drawn from the top down to the ground, and more often used to separate the energies between a master and the student after an attunement. This is the final symbol that is introduced in Reiki. As with all of the symbols, if not used properly, can result in making both yourself and your client energy sick; it is used in sealing the symbols into the chakra energy systems.  It grounds practitioner and student or client during treatments or attunements.  It is thought to represent a strike of lightening from the universe, the life force, Ki energy running through the spine and chakras.  Think of it as pulling the divine source energy down into the body, grounding and healing simultaneously.  I always end every session with this symbol whether it is an attunement or a healing treatment.  That is what works for me, but you may find your own path with this symbol.

Using the Symbols

There are many ways to use the symbols, and really no right or wrong way.   Reiki energy is Divine and only goes to highest good.  However, having said that, you must understand that this is energy work and moving too quickly for a client or too forcefully can make them sick, energy sick as well as yourself.  This can look like anything from nausea and dizziness to violent diarrhea or worse. Pushing and pulling energy in the wrong direction can do nasty things to a person, so be gentle and be smart. Go slowly and practice on yourself first.  Really get to know the symbols, how they feel and work before you go messing around with others, pets and plants included.  No one will thank you for making them sick.

As far as using the symbols, you simply visualize them, draw them with your finger or hand in the air, think their names, or set your intent for what they are.

Healing or Manifesting the Future

Just as you can send Reiki back in time to heal the past, you can send Reiki forward in time to help manifest or heal the future. Use can create any ritual that works for you to send the energy to the future. You can also help a client manifest their future as well. What you create is limitless.

The Surrogate Method for Distance Sessions

There are numerous ways to send the distance Reiki session. You could have a person be a surrogate and give this surrogate and in-person treatment intending the distance client to receive the session. The surrogate is merely a channel and as such you need not worry about them picking up the client’s symptoms or energies. You could use a teddy bear or doll as a surrogate and give the doll a treatment. You could use your upper leg as a surrogate, imagining the knee as the client’s head and the upper thigh as the client’s feet. You could simply imagine the client in front of you. Whatever method of surrogate you choose; you then simply do a full Reiki session on the surrogate with the intention that your distance client receives it. Like with all Reiki they will receive whatever their highest Spirit allows.

You can do the same thing for distance attunements. The same logic applies.  I use visualization and some hand motions while I am at home, I clear both my space and visualize clearing the space for the client.  It is very effective.  I do many attunements and treatments over great distances with no issues.

Reiki on Plants and Animals

Your plants and pets will love Reiki.  Always ask them first.  You can use the same hand positions as with people on your pets, (the next pages are some anatomy sketches.)  For plants, you can just arrange your hands around as it feels appropriate.  You can even use Reiki on your food to increase its vitality before ingesting it.

Laws

The United States has very severe penalties for practicing medicine without a license. Reiki is not diagnostic. We do not in any way attempt to locate or define medical or Psychological needs.

Anyone seeking Reiki treatments who has a medical condition should be reminded to see anappropriate practitioner.

Reiki practitioners do often develop an intuition about areas of concern and possible conditions.

They might ask questions and suggest that the client ask a Doctor about something. During the

treatment many practitioners find that they sometimes receive intuitive impressions or information about the client or situations. Check with your intuitive source before sharing any such information; the information may be intended only for you or it may be meant for you to share. Confirmation of whether or not to share is usually easy to receive, if unsure do not. Remember that you are a Reiki channel not a Doctor or Psychologist (unless you are of course).

Many states have passed laws that do not allow anyone who is not a medical professional, i.e., doctor, chiropractor, massage therapist, or an ordained minister from doing any kinds of hands on healing work.  Many Reiki practioners become ordained ministers.

Attunements:

So the process of Reiki is activated by an attunement.  Some people call it an initiation.  I like attunement, as you are being attuned to the energies.  This is facilitated by a Reiki master / instructor and basically is a process of opening up your aura, your subtle body energies via your crown chakra and placing as well as blowing the symbols gently into the attunee’s energy field.  This basically, plugs the person into the energy source for this frequency and allows them to be a vessel to channel the energy for healing.  There has been some research that has proven that there is indeed a difference between someone who just uses the symbols and someone who has been attuned.  This is why I feel confident to place all of my classes’ information on my blog site without concern.  The effect is not complete without the attunement.

Some teachers break up the attunements into the three stages and others give them all at once. My personal feeling is that I do three separate attunements.  To me this is a safeguard against using symbols and energies before you are ready for them.  Also, I will not do an attunement sooner than 30 days apart.  My feeling is that you need that time for your body and spiritual energy to adjust as well as practice your skills.  There are many instructors that will do all three levels in a weekend.  For me, this is irresponsible, but to each their own and you will have to decide how you will do your own process when you have students.

I want to also share an experience I had in the very beginning when I first started teaching Reiki and doing attunements.  I had a student in a Reiki one class who had lost a child within the past 12 months.  She had been struggling with significant loss as you can imagine.  However, she never told me that.  When I did the attunement on her, opening her chakras and revealing to the Divine source all of her pain and spiritual issues, it made an immediate energy shift in her.  She became violently ill within 5 minutes of completion of the attunement and left the class in tears.  Weeks later I saw her again, she was a bit wary of me, but I learned that she suddenly experienced all of her grief come crashing in on her, the full flush of the energy rushing into her being and then out.  She reported that she had experienced the most peace that she had in the past year about 3 days after the attunement.  I was glad that it helped her, but I had made an error which I never repeated.  Now when I do attunements and I call in all the guides, mine and the other person, I also ask that all issues be cleared and that the attunement go as smoothly as possible.  We are not in control of how a person will react to a treatment or an attunement.  We each have different stuff that we have experienced. I have some clients that attunements were like nothing and others that get sick and dizzy at every level.  It depends on their level of sensitivity; however, you can ask for assistance to make it as smooth as possible.  This is something that I now do without fail.  I don’t ever want to feel the level of responsibility that I felt for that poor woman.  I really feel that it could have been easier for her if I had asked the guides to clear issues first.  You may never know what a person’s issues are, I didn’t in this case, but it is your responsibility to understand energy work and employ a partnership with the spiritual world and the divine energies to ensure a safe and smooth attunement or treatment.

Gassho Position:

Gassho position is simply hands in a humble prayer position. Palms and fingers together pointed upwards in front of your chest.  It is a mudra, (hand position) for gratitude and humility.

The Hui Yin:

The Hui Yin point is located between the anus and the genitals. To do the technique, the point is contracted, and the tongue is placed against the soft palate (behind the upper teeth. Some Masters speculate that when using the Hui Yin and Violet Breath when passing attunements, a special type of high frequency Ki enters the system and passes through the Hui Yin point, making this a more powerful process. Some masters go so far as to speculate that this point must be held for the entire time you are doing the attunements to prevent the Ki from escaping from this point. Usui did not use this process. If you are going to use the Hui Yin, you must practice to develop the muscular control to hold the point for long periods.

This is a muscle, and developing and practice contracting the muscles in this area are necessary to build up strength, however, PULL GENTLY!! Do not strain and hurt yourself!! You can also practice contracting these muscles continuously as you go about your daily activities. As you continue practicing, it will become easier and you will be able to hold them for longer periods of time.

I was not given this information when I was trained, however the holding and the breath work were part of the attunement process I was trained in, so I have researched and included it here for you.  You can work on mastering it or just hold your breath, etc.  I do use breath work in attunements, I feel the air element and blowing the symbols into the chakras and other points is both gentle and important. Try your own method and see what works for you. Again, you will evolve with your process.

The Violet Breath:

Visualize a White Mist surrounding you.  Next, contract the Hui Yin point and place your tongue behind the upper teeth. Breathe in and imagine a white Light coming down through the crown Chakra, through the tongue, down the front of the body (Central Meridian, from bottom lip edge to Hui Yin point), through the Hui Yin point and up the spine (Governing Meridian), to the top, middle of the upper lip. Imagine the white mist filling the head. (This is commonly referred to as the Microcosmic orbit). Now, visualize the white Mist turn blue, then indigo blue and begin rotating clockwise. As the Mist rotates see it turn to Violet. In the Violet Light/Mist visualize the Dumo (see it as golden). During the attunement, blow the Dumo Symbol and Violet breath into the student’s crown Chakra and imagine the Symbol moving into the base of the brain as you say the name of the symbol in your mind.

The Hui Yin and Violet Breath are generally not considered Traditional Techniques. You can pass attunements either using them or not. Some people feel the attunements feel more powerful when using these techniques. This is most likely because the Hui Yin is a chi kung technique called the Microcosmic Orbit. When using this, your Ki becomes part of the mix while doing an attunement. Attunements may “feel” stronger when doing them this way.
