Monifa

I am Lucky.

I have few things in this world,

but I have what I need.

I am surrounded

by what others have thrown away

disregarded—

as useless or unworthy.

That does not taint me

their words, their judgements

their values cannot touch who I am.

I am cleansed by her,

her love, Mother’s love—

purifying.

Monifa

I am lucky.

I have few things in this world,

but I have what I need.

I am surrounded by what is seen as garbage,

concrete and dirt—

 undervalued, underestimated.

However, that dirt is earth—

my land, homeland of my soul,

flesh of my flesh, bone of my bone.

I draw from this concrete,

sand and stone,

I draw from its energy.

I see its value, its true form.

I use this to keep myself clean

my Spirit focused,

untainted by them—

I baptize my child in it all,

purifying him

as I wash from him our ancestral soil.
