Omerta

The code in families—

yours,

mine,

ours—

stay silent

hold in fear,

maintain control,

keep out neighbors.

Code of secrets

covering horrors,

denial,

shame of  abuse, illness.

Like thugs sworn in,

the code becomes bully,

enforcer,

abuser,

perpetuating fear, control

over members;

like family mobsters,

gangs hidden in suburban neighborhoods

behind picket fences,

green lawns

and pearls.

The code ensures,

outward perfection,

escape from suspicion,

detection.

The code we live by,

die by,

omerta.
